Intellectual and cultural exchanges among Ottoman, Persian, and Russian Muslim thinkers in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries; the translation and reinterpretation of modern political and moral ideas such as anarchism, socialism, and moral reform; reformulations of ethical and communal ideals within the broader Islamicate intellectual sphere. Current projects include Mehmed Ref‘i Efendi’s sefâretnâme and Muslim interpretations of Tolstoy as reflections of transimperial moral and political debates.
