Mostafa Abedinifard

Academic Profile

Holding a PhD in Comparative Literature, I am currently a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellow (2017-2019) in the Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations at the University of Toronto, where, under Dr. Mohamad Tavakoli-Targhi's supervision, I am writing a monograph on Iranian modernity and modern Persian humor. Within the broader areas of world literature and Middle Eastern studies, and with a transnational and interdisciplinary scope, I am interested in studying literature and culture and doing cultural history, with especial focus on understudied topics in critical diversity studies. My research publications and dissemination over the past few years have critically analyzed the historical and contemporary social construction of gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, class, dis/ability, and religion in modern Persian literature and culture. An Associate Editor of the Persian Literary Studies Journal, I am concurrently also collaborating with a network of colleagues at universities in Iran, Turkey, Canada, and the United States on several other research projects focused on Iranian men and masculinities, humor in the Middle Eastern and North African cultures, Persianate humor, and comparative Persianate literary and cultural studies.
