Academic Profile

Focused on the minorities related to the Middle East, I have written on groups from China's Uighurs to Kurds. But over the past decades my research emphasis has been on Assyrians, especially those who originate from the Urmiah and Salmas plains. Their cultural history, language retention, intermingling with Assyrians from Ottoman Turkey, Iraq and Syria provide a rich source of minority studies especially in view of the extensive periodical press emanating from this group such as the first periodical published in Iran. I am also active in helping to fund cultural activity that aims at retaining and enhancing the use of the living Aramaic language through such organizations as Mesopotamian Night.
