Abstract:
Despite shared forms in Iranian bazaar architecture in general, geography and climate, not to mention local economies and political structures, must be expected to contribute to variations in the architectonics of the bazaar. Those dating to the Safavid period (1501-1722) represent some of the most compelling historical evidence of the impact of climate on the architecture of the Iranian bazaar. This paper takes a comparative look at three bazaars: Lar (the province of Fars), Kerman (Province of Kerman) and Sanandaj (Province of Kurdistan). With an emphasis on the bazaar in Lar, the relationship between practicalities of transport, storage and display in a marketplace, and the relevance of climactic needs, including lighting and ventilation, will be explored as criteria for the architectural aesthetics of Safavid bazaars.
